India’s Ambitious Push for Homegrown AI Models: A Game Changer for Developers

India is setting the stage for a significant leap in artificial intelligence by aiming to fund 15-20 homegrown AI models. This initiative, part of the IndiaAI Mission, was announced by Abhishek Singh, Additional Secretary at MeitY and CEO of IndiaAI, during the Semicon India event. The focus is on creating large and small language models to bolster the capabilities of AI developers across the nation.

The Drive for Local AI Development

The Indian government has already funded four foundation-model teams: Sarvam AI, Soket AI, Gnani.ai, and Gan.ai. These teams are pioneering efforts to develop AI models that cater to Indian languages and contexts. With eight more teams nearing selection, the initiative underscores a robust push to localize AI capabilities.

Key Highlights:

  • Foundation Models: Sarvam AI and others are leading the charge.
  • Upcoming Announcements: Eight more teams are on the brink of selection.

Empowering Developers with Affordable Resources

One of the most significant challenges for AI developers is the cost of resources. To address this, IndiaAI has arranged nearly 38,000 GPUs for researchers and startups. These are available at a competitive rate of Rs 65 per GPU-hour, significantly lower than global rates.

Challenges and Sustainability Concerns

While the initiative is promising, there are concerns about energy and carbon constraints. Singh emphasized the need for green-power allocation to ensure AI growth is sustainable. This highlights the importance of balancing technological advancement with environmental responsibility.

Government-Funded AI Prototypes

The government is also working on deploying AI prototypes across various ministries and states. These projects, part of IndiaAI’s Application Development Initiative, include applications for tuberculosis triage, crop advisory, disaster alerts, and more.

Current Status:

  • 30 AI Prototypes: Positioned for deployment with ministries and states.
  • Focus Areas: Health, agriculture, disaster management, and education.

Upcoming AI Impact Summit

Looking ahead, IndiaAI is planning an AI Impact Summit in Delhi in February 2026. The summit will focus on themes like jobs and skilling, economic productivity, and sustainable AI. Events leading up to the summit include hackathons, a startup pitch-fest, and a research symposium.

Themes:

  • People, Planet, Progress: A holistic approach to AI development.
  • Engagement: Hackathons and symposiums to foster innovation and collaboration.

The Bigger Picture

India’s focus on developing homegrown AI models is a strategic move to enhance its position in the global AI landscape. By supporting local developers and creating resources tailored to Indian needs, the country is paving the way for significant advancements in technology.

Thought-Provoking Questions:

  • How can India balance AI growth with sustainability?
