In a shocking turn of events, Canvas, the popular learning management system (LMS) used by several top-tier Indian universities, has been hit by a global outage and data breach. The incident is having far-reaching consequences for students who are already navigating a grueling academic calendar.
TIming and Academic Impact
The outage couldn’t have come at a worse time. Many universities, including those with summer semesters currently in progress, are unable to access course materials, submit assignments, or view grades. Admissions and orientation processes are also being disrupted, with institutions like Delhi University and others experiencing delays due to the reliance on Canvas-integrated portals.
Upcoming odd semester preparations for universities opening in July/August are also being complicated by the breach. For Chandigarh University and others, the incident is making it difficult to prepare new course shells and conduct faculty orientation.
The Data Breach Risk
But the severity of the situation goes beyond just a service outage. The hacker group ShinyHunters claims to have stolen 3.65 TB of data affecting nearly 9,000 institutions worldwide. For Indian students, this potentially exposes personal information, private messages, and even creates phishing risks.
Current “Maintenance Mode” Status
As of today, May 7, 2026, many Canvas instances remain in “maintenance mode” or are experiencing total downtime. While Instructure claimed the incident was “resolved” on May 6, many universities are reporting continued unavailability while they perform their own security audits.
What Universities are Doing
Since the outage is vendor-side (Instructure/AWS), local IT departments have limited control. Common temporary measures include switching to Microsoft Teams or Google Classroom for urgent communication, distributing materials via regular email or QR codes in physical classrooms, and postponing deadlines for summer term assignments and exams.
As students navigate this challenging situation, they are left wondering what happens next. Will the Canvas LMS be up and running smoothly soon? How will universities adapt to the new reality of the data breach? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain – Indian students deserve a seamless learning experience, free from disruptions caused by such critical incidents.
