Sarla Aviation’s $10 Million Funding Boost: A New Era for Electric Air Taxis

Sarla Aviation, an innovative aerospace startup, recently made headlines by securing $10 million in funding led by Accel. This substantial investment aims to propel the startup’s vision of revolutionizing urban mobility with electric air taxis. With the participation of prominent angel investors like Flipkart co-founder Binny Bansal, Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath, and Swiggy co-founder Sriharsha Majety, Sarla Aviation is poised to make significant strides in the aerospace industry.

The Vision for Electric Air Taxis

Founded in 2024 by Adrian Schmidt, Rakesh Gaonkar, and Shivam Chauhan, Sarla Aviation is headquartered in Bengaluru. The company aims to address urban congestion through the introduction of electric air taxis. With cities across India grappling with traffic woes, this solution could offer a much-needed alternative to traditional ground transportation.

The startup plans to utilize the newly acquired funds to establish a state-of-the-art research and development center in Bengaluru. This facility will focus on advancing their technology, scaling the team beyond its current 30 employees, and developing new prototypes. These steps are critical in ensuring that Sarla Aviation can bring their vision of electric air taxis to fruition.

Unveiling the Shunya Prototype

Sarla Aviation’s first prototype, aptly named Shunya—meaning "zero" in Hindi—is set to be showcased publicly on January 17 at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in New Delhi. This prototype is designed to carry up to 680 kilograms, accommodating six passengers plus a pilot. This capacity is a departure from typical flying taxi concepts, which usually cater to two to four passengers. The company believes that a shorter range of about 160 kilometers is acceptable if it allows for heavier payloads at competitive prices.

Adrian Schmidt, a co-founder of Sarla Aviation, brings valuable experience to the table, having previously worked with Munich-based air taxi venture Lilium, as well as in the automotive sector with Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen. His move to Bengaluru in 2023 was driven by India’s market potential and the opportunity to develop an all-electric flying taxi service.

Preparing for Commercial Operations

Sarla Aviation has ambitious plans to commence commercial operations by 2028, starting with airport transfers in Bengaluru before expanding to Mumbai, Delhi, and Pune. The startup also intends to launch a free air ambulance service alongside its commercial ride-sharing flights. This multifaceted approach not only aims to provide a new mode of urban transportation but also addresses critical needs such as rapid medical response.

In preparation for the rollout of its flying taxi service, Sarla Aviation has partnered with Bengaluru International Airport. This collaboration underscores the company’s commitment to ensuring a seamless integration of their service into existing transportation infrastructure. Meanwhile, other players like The ePlane Company and Archer Aviation are also eyeing the Indian market, indicating a growing interest in this innovative transportation solution.

The Road Ahead

Sarla Aviation’s vision of affordable flying taxis is not just about convenience; it addresses pressing urban challenges such as traffic congestion, pollution, and the need for rapid medical response. As Pratik Agarwal, principal at Accel, aptly puts it, the company’s mission aligns with the future of urban mobility.

While the journey to commercial operations is still a few years away, Sarla Aviation’s progress thus far is promising. The successful funding round and the upcoming showcase of the Shunya prototype are significant milestones that reflect the company’s potential to transform urban transportation in India.

As the aerospace startup continues to innovate and expand, it will be fascinating to see how Sarla Aviation navigates the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. With a focus on sustainability and efficiency, their electric air taxis could very well become a cornerstone of urban mobility in the years to come.
