Anushka Sharma Invests in Sportswear Startup Agilitas Joining Cap Table
Share

Sportswear startup Agilitas Sports has announced the addition of Bollywood actor Anushka Sharma as an investor and strategic partner, marking her entry into the rapidly expanding athleisure market. This collaboration aims to enhance Agilitas’s presence in the wellness sector by launching a new line of yoga-focused activewear under the One8 brand, co-created by Sharma. The launch, scheduled for June 21, aligns with the International Day of Yoga, emphasizing the brand’s commitment to integrating wellness into lifestyle apparel.

### Agilitas Sports and Its Strategic Expansion

Founded in 2023 by Abhishek Ganguly, along with Atul Bajaj and Amit Prabhu, all former executives at Puma India, Agilitas Sports has quickly positioned itself as a vertically integrated sportswear company. The startup handles everything from product design and manufacturing to distribution and retail, allowing it to maintain a strong hold over quality and innovation. Agilitas’s acquisition of the One8 brand from Indian cricket star Virat Kohli last year was a significant milestone, with Kohli investing ₹40 crore and partnering with the company as an investor and co-creator. This move set the stage for further expansion into lifestyle and wellness categories, a strategy that Sharma’s involvement will likely accelerate.

### Context and Competitive Landscape

Agilitas Sports is venturing into a competitive yet burgeoning market in India. The country’s athleisure sector is on a growth trajectory, projected to reach $22.4 billion by 2034. This growth is driven by increasing consumer interest in fitness and lifestyle-oriented apparel. Agilitas faces competition from established players like Nike, Adidas, and domestic brands such as HRX by Hrithik Roshan. However, the startup’s focus on vertical integration and strategic celebrity partnerships gives it a unique edge. The acquisition of Mochiko Shoes and the launch of Sportsyard, a multi-brand sports retail chain, further solidify its position in the market.

### Implications for India’s Startup Ecosystem

The partnership between Agilitas and Anushka Sharma signifies a growing trend of celebrity involvement in Indian startups, which can provide significant boosts in visibility and credibility. For the Indian startup ecosystem, this collaboration showcases the potential for cross-industry partnerships to drive innovation and market expansion. Agilitas’s strategy to integrate wellness into its product offerings aligns with broader consumer trends towards health and fitness, presenting opportunities for other startups to explore niche markets within the athleisure sector.

Looking ahead, Agilitas’s expansion into yoga and wellness apparel is a clear indication of its growth strategy. For founders and investors in the Indian startup ecosystem, this move highlights the importance of strategic partnerships and market positioning in scaling operations. As Agilitas prepares to launch its new product line, stakeholders should watch for consumer reception and market impact, which could signal further opportunities for collaboration and innovation in the athleisure market.
