Bhavish Aggarwal’s AI Startup Krutrim Unveils DeepSeek R1 for Indian Developers

Bhavish Aggarwal, co-founder of Ola, is making waves in the AI sector with his latest venture, Krutrim. The startup has introduced DeepSeek R1 671B, an open-source AI model, to the Indian market. With an enticing offer of just ₹1 per million tokens throughout February, Krutrim aims to democratize AI access, fostering innovation and adoption across the country.

The Vision Behind Krutrim’s DeepSeek R1

Krutrim’s introduction of DeepSeek R1 is more than just a technological advancement; it’s a strategic move to position India as a significant player in the global AI landscape. Aggarwal emphasizes the importance of cautious deployment of the DeepSeek app while highlighting the safe deployment of its open-source version on Indian servers. This initiative aims to accelerate AI progress in India, leveraging Nvidia’s H100 graphics processing units via the Krutrim AI Cloud. By being the first to deploy DeepSeek-R1 671B on H100 GPUs, Krutrim is setting a precedent for AI adoption among Indian businesses and developers.

Competitive Pricing and Strategic Goals

Krutrim’s pricing strategy is a game-changer. Offering DeepSeek R1 at ₹1 per million tokens is significantly more affordable than competitors like Llama-3-8B-Instruct and Google’s Gemma-27B. This approach not only encourages experimentation but also aims to integrate more Indian users into the AI ecosystem. Aggarwal’s vision is clear: make AI accessible and drive innovation from the grassroots level.

Supercomputing Ambitions

Krutrim is not stopping at DeepSeek R1. Plans are underway to deploy Nvidia’s GB200 GPUs by March 2025, creating what Aggarwal describes as “the largest supercomputer in India.” This infrastructure will support AI model training and management on an unprecedented scale in the country. The move is part of Krutrim’s broader mission to open-source much of its work by 2024, fostering a robust AI community in India capable of competing with global leaders.

Establishing Krutrim AI Lab

Further solidifying its commitment to AI advancement, Krutrim has launched the Krutrim AI Lab, a ₹2,000-crore initiative dedicated to AI research and open-source model development. With plans to increase investment to ₹10,000 crore by next year, the lab aims to unite India’s AI community. This collaborative effort seeks to address challenges like data scarcity and cultural context in Indian languages, ultimately enhancing AI’s relevance and applicability in India.

A Focus on India’s AI Future

Founded in April 2023, Krutrim has already achieved unicorn status. Aggarwal, alongside co-founder Krishnamurthy Venugopala Tenneti, envisions a future where India’s AI community thrives through local hosting of powerful models. By prioritizing an open-source approach and affordable access to AI tools, Krutrim is laying the groundwork for a collaborative environment that ensures AI developments cater to Indian languages and cultural contexts.

The Road Ahead

Krutrim’s initiatives are a testament to the potential of AI in India. By offering affordable access to cutting-edge AI models and investing heavily in research and infrastructure, Krutrim is not just fostering innovation but also nurturing an ecosystem where Indian developers can thrive. Will this approach lead to a new era of AI-driven solutions tailored to India’s unique challenges? Only time will tell, but the foundations being laid today are promising.

In conclusion, Krutrim’s efforts are a bold step towards making AI accessible and relevant in India. By focusing on affordability, collaboration, and local context, Krutrim is setting the stage for a future where AI is not just a technological advancement but a tool for societal transformation.
