Transforming Indian Classical Music: Shanit Ghose’s AI-Driven Innovation

In the realm of music, innovation and tradition often collide to create something extraordinary. This is precisely what 19-year-old Shanit Ghose has achieved with his groundbreaking AI tool, Sur. Designed specifically for Indian classical music, Sur is revolutionizing how music producers and enthusiasts interact with this traditional genre.

The Challenge of Isolating Indian Classical Music Stems

Music, at its core, is a composition of various layers known as "stems." These include vocals, instruments, and percussion, which come together to form a complete piece. While Western music has seen advancements in stem isolation, Indian classical music presents unique challenges due to its complex and nuanced layers.

Existing tools for stem isolation are predominantly Western-focused, leaving a gap for genres like Indian classical music. This is where Shanit Ghose’s Sur steps in. With a proprietary AI algorithm trained on over 350 Indian classical tracks, Sur can isolate and analyze the intricate layers of this genre with precision.

Shanit Ghose: The Young Innovator

Shanit Ghose’s journey into music innovation began early. Growing up in Mumbai, he started with the piano at four and shifted to guitar by ten. His passion for music led him to explore production, drawing inspiration from his Bollywood composer aunt.

During his high school years, Ghose faced challenges in finding backing tracks that excluded original guitar parts. This frustration led him to delve into music production, eventually realizing the potential of stems in enhancing musical creativity.

Sur: Bridging Tradition and Technology

Launched in early 2024, Sur is not just a tool but a platform that empowers music producers to incorporate Indian classical music into their work. By collaborating with independent artists, Sur offers a curated sample library, providing a rich resource for creative exploration.

Sur’s subscription model is designed to be accessible, with options ranging from basic stem splitting to premium features that include exclusive samples. This approach ensures that both emerging and established artists can benefit from high-quality, genre-specific tools.

The Impact and Future of Sur

The global music production software market is projected to grow significantly, with the Indian segment expected to reach $500 million by 2029. Sur is poised to capitalize on this growth, with plans to partner with platforms like Logic Pro and integrate into global music education programs.

Shanit Ghose’s vision extends beyond Indian classical music. He plans to explore other niche genres, such as Russian and Italian music, broadening the scope of Sur’s capabilities. With over 100 users currently, the platform aims to onboard 10,000+ users within a year.

Industry Support and Recognition

Shanit Ghose’s innovation has not gone unnoticed. Renowned Indian music composer and singer Salim Merchant has expressed interest in supporting Sur. Merchant acknowledges the tool’s potential to transform music production, stating, "Sur is an incredible innovation by Shanit, blending Indian classical music with modern technology."

A New Era for Indian Classical Music

Sur represents a significant step forward in the integration of traditional music genres with modern technology. It not only addresses the limitations faced by music producers but also opens up new opportunities for Indian classical music to find its place in mainstream platforms.

By empowering independent artists and encouraging the exploration of niche genres, Sur fosters a creative ecosystem that benefits both creators and consumers. As Shanit Ghose continues to innovate, the future of music production looks promising, with endless possibilities for blending tradition and technology.

In a world where music transcends boundaries, Sur is a testament to the power of innovation and the enduring legacy of Indian classical music. Whether you’re a music producer, enthusiast, or someone curious about the intersection of tradition and technology, Sur offers a glimpse into the future of music.
