Bhavish Aggarwal’s AI Startup Krutrim Partners with Lenovo to Develop India’s Largest Supercomputer

In a groundbreaking move, Bhavish Aggarwal’s AI startup, Krutrim, has teamed up with Lenovo to build what is set to become India’s largest supercomputer. This ambitious project is not just about creating a supercomputer; it also involves developing a new large language model, Krutrim 3, with a staggering 700 billion parameters. This collaboration marks a significant step in India’s journey towards becoming a global leader in AI development.

Krutrim’s Vision: A Leap Towards AI Sovereignty

Krutrim, founded by Aggarwal, has rapidly made a name for itself in the AI landscape. The company’s focus on AI infrastructure and innovation is evident from its recent achievements. In late 2023, Krutrim launched Krutrim 1 and Krutrim 2, both open-source projects with 7 billion and 12 billion parameters, respectively. Now, with Krutrim 3, the company aims to position India as a formidable contender in the global AI race.

Speaking at Lenovo Tech World India 2025 in Mumbai, Ola Group CIO Navendu Agarwal emphasized the importance of this partnership. "We are building the largest infrastructure, and along with Lenovo, we are building the largest supercomputer of India," he stated. This initiative is not only about technological advancement but also about fostering India’s independence in AI infrastructure.

The Strategic Alliance with Lenovo

The collaboration with Lenovo is a strategic move for Krutrim. Lenovo’s expertise in computing infrastructure complements Krutrim’s vision of creating a robust AI ecosystem. This partnership aims to address India’s lack of hyperscale data centers and dedicated AI research clouds, which are crucial for hosting large-scale AI engines.

Krutrim’s team, comprising 700 members, is dedicated to creating full-stack AI solutions. These solutions span various applications, from contact center AI to manufacturing AI and an "agentic platform" that startups and the broader ecosystem can use to build cost-effective, India-focused applications.

Investment and Future Prospects

Bhavish Aggarwal’s commitment to Krutrim is evident from his substantial investment plans. He has pledged Rs 2,000 crore in Krutrim, with plans to expand this investment to Rs 10,000 crore by next year. This financial backing underscores the potential Aggarwal sees in Krutrim’s AI initiatives.

Moreover, Krutrim’s partnership with American chip giant Nvidia for deploying GB200 "superchips" and testing advanced AI models from Chinese startup DeepSeek highlights the company’s focus on data privacy and cutting-edge technology.

The Push for Sovereign AI Infrastructure

The urgency for sovereign AI infrastructure is growing as countries strive to reduce reliance on foreign platforms and cloud providers. Krutrim’s efforts are crucial in this context, as they aim to build and host India’s own large-scale AI engines. This move aligns with the global trend of countries seeking to establish their AI capabilities independently.

Krutrim’s open-source approach, as seen with Krutrim 2 and other foundational models like Chitrarth 1 (a vision-language model) and Dhwani 1 (a speech-language model), further emphasizes its commitment to democratizing AI access.

Engaging the Public and the Future of AI in India

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Bhavish Aggarwal expressed his enthusiasm for the project, inviting suggestions from the public for naming the supercomputer. "Building India’s largest supercomputer in @Krutrim with @Lenovo! Need much more to bring in the AI revolution to India at scale!" he wrote.

This engagement with the public reflects Krutrim’s approach to involving the community in its journey. As India continues to make strides in AI, the question remains: How will these advancements shape the country’s technological landscape and its position on the global stage?

Conclusion

Krutrim’s collaboration with Lenovo is a significant milestone in India’s AI journey. With Krutrim 3 and the largest supercomputer in the country, India is poised to become a major player in the global AI arena. This partnership not only highlights the potential of Indian startups but also underscores the importance of sovereign AI infrastructure in today’s competitive world.
