Google-owned YouTube has appointed Gunjan Soni as its new country managing director for India, marking a significant leadership change as the platform continues to deepen its presence in one of its largest markets.

Anand stated, "As India remains one of YouTube’s most vibrant and crucial markets, brimming with creativity and opportunity, I’m delighted to announce that Gunjan Soni has joined YouTube as our new Country Managing Director for India."

He further added, "YouTube’s journey in India continues to be vibrant and dynamic, representing a country filled with immense creative energy and potential. I am excited to welcome Gunjan, a seasoned leader, to guide our next phase of growth. Gunjan’s deep understanding of the creator economy and India’s video commerce landscape, combined with her leadership, will enable us to accelerate creator growth, unlock new opportunities, engage users, and contribute meaningfully to India’s digital journey."

Gunjan Soni’s Leadership Experience

Gunjan Soni brings over two decades of leadership experience spanning business, technology, marketing, and e-commerce. She previously served as Group CEO at Zalora in Singapore, where she introduced new categories, launched innovative business models, and improved customer experience through personalization and loyalty programs.

Before Zalora, Soni held leadership roles at Flipkart’s Myntra and Jabong, served as executive vice president at Star India, where she played a pivotal role in launching Hotstar, and was a partner at McKinsey in the consumer and marketing practice. She currently serves on the board of CBRE Group, a Fortune 500 company.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Soni said, "Witnessing how YouTube empowers creators and connects communities across India is truly inspiring. I’m particularly excited about building on this foundation, fostering innovation, and further enhancing the platform’s role in helping creators unlock new storytelling opportunities and reach audiences globally. I am excited to work with and support our incredible partners across the ecosystem."

Implications for YouTube India

Soni’s appointment comes at a time when YouTube is facing increasing competition in the Indian market from platforms like JioCinema and Hotstar. Her extensive experience in the digital and e-commerce sectors positions her well to navigate these challenges and drive growth for YouTube in India.

Under her leadership, YouTube India is expected to focus on:

  • Enhancing Creator Support: Developing programs and tools to help creators produce high-quality content and monetize their channels effectively.

  • Expanding Regional Content: Investing in content that caters to India’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape.

  • Strengthening Partnerships: Collaborating with local businesses and advertisers to create mutually beneficial opportunities.

Soni’s track record suggests a strategic approach to these initiatives, aiming to solidify YouTube’s position as a leading platform in India’s digital ecosystem.

As YouTube continues to evolve, the industry will be watching closely to see how Soni’s leadership influences the platform’s trajectory in one of its most dynamic markets.
