Empowering the Blind: SHG Technologies’ Vision Revolution

In a world where over 100 million people face visual impairments, SHG Technologies Pvt. Ltd. is making waves. Founded in 2020 by Ramu Muthangi, a former Indian Navy officer, this Bangalore-based startup is transforming lives with its innovative Smart Vision Glasses.

From Personal Pain to Technological Breakthrough

Ramu Muthangi’s journey from the Indian Navy to tech giants like Honeywell Aerospace laid the groundwork for SHG Technologies. The inspiration came from a personal tragedy—his sister’s battle with blindness due to diabetic retinopathy. This challenge ignited a mission to create accessible, affordable assistive technology.

Smart Vision Glasses harness AI, machine vision, and augmented reality to offer real-time voice feedback for object recognition, obstacle detection, text reading, facial identification, and navigation. Designed for Indian conditions, these glasses are rugged, user-friendly, and support multiple regional languages.

Building a Purpose-Driven Startup

SHG stands for Smart Health Global, reflecting its broader mission: to leverage intelligent technologies to enhance health and human capability. The startup’s lean team, led by CEO and CTO Ramu Muthangi and co-founder Capt. DJ Raju, is driven by empathy and innovation.

India has 20 million blind individuals and over 80 million with moderate to severe visual impairment. For many, assistive devices are out of reach. SHG’s Smart Vision Glasses bridge this gap with affordability and regional customization.

Addressing a Critical Need

While global competitors offer similar products at exorbitant prices, SHG’s solution is priced nearly ten times lower. It includes features like LIDAR for enhanced spatial awareness and is tailored for India’s linguistic and environmental landscape.

SHG operates on a multi-pronged revenue model: direct and institutional sales, CSR partnerships, and global outreach. Clients include eye hospitals, NGOs, and educational institutions. With support from Infosys Foundation, IOCL, and Sony, SHG has impacted over 7,000 lives across 20 Indian states.

Recognized for Innovation

SHG Technologies has earned accolades such as the Infosys Aarohan Social Innovation Award and recognition at the World Conference on Blindness. These honors underscore its growing impact and credibility.

The startup is expanding globally, with interest from countries in the Gulf and Southeast Asia. Its product line now includes Aura Vision Glasses for low vision users and Smart Vision Ultra for advanced features.

The Road Ahead

In the next 12 months, SHG plans to scale its regional support centers, deepen government and CSR collaborations, and expand its product ecosystem. Long-term goals include impacting 1 million lives and developing a comprehensive suite of assistive tools for independent living.

As Ramu Muthangi puts it, "When you’re driven by a mission, every barrier becomes a stepping stone. We’re not just building technology; we’re empowering the person who needs it."

A Broader Perspective

SHG Technologies is not alone in this endeavor. Companies like Aira and OrCam also contribute to the assistive tech landscape, each with unique approaches and technologies. These collaborations and innovations are crucial in creating a more inclusive world.

Conclusion

SHG Technologies exemplifies how personal experiences can drive technological innovation. By focusing on affordability and accessibility, they are changing the way visually impaired individuals interact with the world. What challenges do you think still exist in making assistive technology more accessible globally?
