Share

South Korean gaming giant Krafton has recently invested an undisclosed amount in Shuru, an Indore-based hyperlocal community app. This strategic move underscores Krafton’s commitment to deepening its engagement with India’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.

Shuru: Empowering Local Communities

Founded by Mayank Bhangadia and Harsh Chhabra, Shuru is a location-based social networking platform designed to digitally empower communities by fostering local connections. The app offers features such as trending updates, local shop information, buy-sell listings, and classifieds, serving over 2 million monthly active users across India.

Mayank, an IIT Delhi alumnus, previously co-founded Roposo, a short-video platform that reached 100 million users before its acquisition by InMobi’s Glance. Harsh, who led product development at Roposo, later founded GoParento, a parenting community app.

Krafton’s Strategic Investment in Shuru

Krafton’s investment in Shuru is part of its broader strategy to engage more effectively with regional audiences and drive grassroots-level community connections. By leveraging Shuru’s platform, Krafton aims to broaden its reach for its games across local markets in one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.

Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO of Krafton India, emphasized the potential of India’s hyperlocal digital ecosystem, stating, "The hyperlocal digital ecosystem in India holds immense promise, and we see it as a vital driver of connectivity and community engagement. Shuru is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation in India."

Mayank Bhangadia, CEO of Shuru, highlighted the synergy between the two companies: "With 650,000+ locations on board and recently crossing 1 crore installations, we’re creating a platform that will redefine the way Indians live, work, and interact. The partnership with Krafton India opens unparalleled opportunities for Shuru to innovate and scale."

Krafton’s Broader Investment Strategy in India

Since 2021, Krafton has invested over $200 million in Indian startups across interactive entertainment, gaming, esports, and technology. The company also supports the local gaming ecosystem through its Krafton India Gaming Incubator (KIGI). In March 2024, KIGI launched its inaugural cohort, providing mentorship and grants of up to $150,000 to selected game development startups. The program aims to nurture India’s gaming talent and foster innovation in the sector. (thehindubusinessline.com)

In August 2023, Krafton committed to investing an additional $150 million in the Indian gaming and startup ecosystem over the next two to three years. This commitment reflects Krafton’s dedication to fueling growth and innovation in India’s digital landscape. (timesofindia.indiatimes.com)

The Significance of Hyperlocal Platforms in India’s Digital Growth

Hyperlocal platforms like Shuru play a crucial role in India’s digital growth by connecting users with local information and services. These platforms cater to the unique needs of diverse communities, offering personalized content and fostering community engagement.

Krafton’s investment in Shuru aligns with its strategy to tap into India’s vast and diverse user base. By integrating hyperlocal content, Krafton can enhance user experiences and strengthen its presence in regional markets.

Future Prospects

The partnership between Krafton and Shuru is poised to bring innovative features and high-engagement games to Shuru’s rapidly growing user base. By combining Krafton’s expertise in gaming and entertainment with Shuru’s deep understanding of local communities, the collaboration aims to redefine digital interactions in India.

As India’s digital ecosystem continues to evolve, investments in hyperlocal platforms are likely to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of community engagement and digital empowerment.
