Bengaluru: A Rising Powerhouse in Global Tech

Bengaluru has firmly established itself among the world’s elite technology cities, crossing the one-million mark in tech workforce. According to CBRE’s Global Tech Talent Guidebook 2025, this milestone places Bengaluru in the ‘Powerhouse’ category, alongside global giants like San Francisco, London, and Tokyo.

The Rise of Bengaluru

  • Demographic Strength: With a working-age population constituting 75.5% of its residents, Bengaluru ranks fourth among the 12 powerhouse cities. The city has seen a 2.4% growth in this demographic between 2019 and 2024, ensuring a steady supply of skilled professionals.

  • Educational Backbone: The presence of esteemed institutions like the Indian Institutes of Science and premier engineering colleges has been pivotal in shaping Bengaluru’s workforce pipeline.

  • Venture Capital and Innovation: The city saw $3.3 billion in venture capital deals in 2024, with 34 focused on AI. This highlights Bengaluru’s role in global AI research and product engineering.

Strategic Importance in AI

Bengaluru’s strategic role in AI development is noteworthy. The city has outpaced many global peers with a 12% growth in tech employment between 2018 and 2023. Anshuman Magazine, chairman and CEO for India, South-East Asia, Middle East, and Africa at CBRE, remarked on Bengaluru’s emergence as a global tech powerhouse, emphasizing India’s strategic depth in digital innovation and AI.

CBRE’s Ada Choi noted that as global companies seek transformative AI capabilities, cities like Bengaluru become central to long-term corporate strategies. This trend is further supported by Bengaluru’s scalable, high-skill, and cost-competitive environment for AI-led solutions.

The Broader National Landscape

Bengaluru’s growth reflects a larger national pattern in India:

  • Delhi-NCR: Completed 183 VC deals worth $1.9 billion in 2024, hosting 15 unicorns and 16 IPO-stage companies.

  • Mumbai: Led India with 167 deals totaling $4.9 billion, anchored by 26 AI investments and 47 public listings.

  • Ahmedabad and Jaipur: Emerging as new innovation hubs. Ahmedabad’s GIFT City is expected to house over 550 firms, while Jaipur attracts startups with its concentration of engineering colleges and low operational costs.

Challenges and Opportunities

While Bengaluru thrives, it faces challenges such as labor and real estate costs. However, the city’s ability to offer a cost-competitive environment remains a significant advantage for tech companies.

Looking Ahead

Bengaluru’s journey offers insights into the future of tech cities. As the city continues to grow, questions arise: How will Bengaluru sustain its momentum? What lessons can other cities learn from its success?

Bengaluru’s story is not just about numbers. It’s a testament to the city’s resilience, innovation, and strategic importance in the global tech landscape. As you reflect on Bengaluru’s journey, consider how your city can emulate its success and become a hub of innovation.
