IRCTC Updates: Aadhaar & OTP Required Starting July 1
Share

Starting July 1, 2025, the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will implement significant changes to the Tatkal ticket booking process, introducing mandatory Aadhaar authentication and OTP verification. These reforms aim to enhance transparency and ensure fair access for genuine travelers.

Key Changes in Tatkal Booking

1. Mandatory Aadhaar Authentication

From July 1, 2025, passengers booking Tatkal tickets via the IRCTC website or app must undergo Aadhaar verification. During login, IRCTC will cross-check Aadhaar details through the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) before allowing Tatkal bookings. This measure is designed to eliminate fraudulent accounts and ensure that only legitimate travelers can book tickets. (amritavidyalayam.in)

2. OTP Verification for All Bookings

Starting July 15, 2025, an additional layer of security will be introduced: every Tatkal booking—whether online, at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters, or through authorized agents—will require a one-time password (OTP) sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile number. This step ensures that the person booking the ticket is the Aadhaar holder, preventing misuse. (sancharnet.in)

3. Restricted Agent Bookings During Peak Hours

To deter bulk bookings and give individual passengers a fair chance, ticketing agents will be restricted from making Tatkal bookings during peak demand periods:

  • AC Classes: 10:00 AM–10:30 AM
  • Non-AC Classes: 11:00 AM–11:30 AM

Agents can participate only after these windows close, providing real individuals a head start. (hellorail.in)

Technological Enhancements to Support Reforms

IRCTC has undertaken a comprehensive overhaul of its backend systems to support these reforms:

  • Record-Breaking Performance: On May 22, 2025, the revamped system handled a record 31,814 bookings in 60 seconds, demonstrating its enhanced capacity and stability.
  • Deactivation of Suspicious IDs: Approximately 2.5 crore suspicious IDs were deactivated to prevent misuse.
  • Anti-Bot Measures: Effective anti-bot measures have been introduced to block automated scripts that previously exploited the booking system.
  • Infrastructure Upgrades: Enhancements, including a robust Content Delivery Network (CDN) and AI-based ID screening, support faster access for genuine users.

Benefits for Genuine Travelers

These reforms are set to provide several advantages for authentic passengers:

  • Reduced Competition from Bots: With fake IDs deactivated and bots blocked, the Tatkal booking window becomes more accessible to individual passengers.
  • Fairer Access: Aadhaar and OTP checks ensure legitimate users get priority during the opening minutes, discouraging agents from monopolizing tickets.
  • Enhanced System Performance: Recent infrastructure upgrades have reduced crashes and lag, crucial when every millisecond counts during booking.
  • Generous Ticket Cap: Individuals can book up to four PNR seats, while seniors retain their concessions (Tatkal fares exclude discounts).

Steps to Prepare Before July 1

To ensure a smooth transition, passengers should take the following steps:

  1. Link Aadhaar with IRCTC Account: Navigate to “My Profile” → “Manage OTP & KYC” on the IRCTC website or app and add your Aadhaar number.
  2. Update Mobile Number: Ensure your mobile number matches the one linked with your Aadhaar to receive OTPs.
  3. Complete OTP Authentication: Post-July 15, complete OTP authentication at counters or through agents as required.
  4. Avoid Agents During Early Windows: Since agents are blocked during peak booking times, it’s advisable to book directly.
  5. Optimize Booking Process: Save passenger details, log in early, and use both desktop and app platforms to enhance booking speed.

A Win for Genuine Travelers

Introduced in 1997, the Tatkal system was designed to provide swift, emergency reservations for travelers. Over the years, misuse by bots and agents undermined this purpose, turning critical tickets into premium commodities. The new measures aim to reverse this trend.

As the Railway Ministry stated:

“These changes are designed to bring greater transparency and fairness into the Tatkal booking system.”

For genuine users, this means:

  • Greater Participation: Early access without battling illegitimate actors.
  • Enhanced Security: Aadhaar and OTP ensure tickets go to the right person.
  • Better Experience: Faster, crash-resistant booking interface.
  • Equitable Distribution: Agents barred from the crucial window; common users get a fairer shot.

While technology upgrades are already in place, the Aadhaar mandate will begin on July 1, 2025, and OTP verification at all touchpoints goes live on July 15, 2025. Travelers should act now—link Aadhaar, verify their accounts, and prepare to reclaim their rightful access to Tatkal tickets.
