How Fery Rides is Transforming Women’s Safety in Commuting

In a world where public transport is often synonymous with anxiety for women, Fery Rides is redefining mobility by prioritizing safety and convenience. As a women-led platform, Fery Rides is tackling the challenges of commuting head-on, offering a unique solution that resonates with many.

The Genesis of Fery Rides

Ajay Kumar and Vindhya Mehrotra, the minds behind Fery Rides, were driven by personal experiences and a shared vision. Kumar’s encounter with a friend’s distressing bike taxi ride in Chandigarh highlighted the pressing need for safer commuting options. This incident ignited a mission to create a service where women wouldn’t have to compromise on safety or affordability.

The duo’s extensive research, involving interviews with nearly 6,000 potential users, revealed a glaring demand: 98% of women preferred female drivers. This insight laid the foundation for Fery Rides, launched in 2023, to fill the gap in the market.

A Zero-Anxiety Mobility Model

Fery Rides operates as India’s first women-led, zero-anxiety mobility platform. Its electric fleet and female drivers make it a standout choice for women seeking safe transport. The service offers:

  • On-demand and Scheduled Rides: Users can book in advance, ensuring predictable and hassle-free travel.
  • Zero-Cancellation Policy: Rides are automatically assigned, eliminating cancellations and ensuring shorter wait times.
  • Flat Pricing: With no surge charges, the service remains affordable, starting at Rs 27–28 for the first 2 km.

Empowering Women Drivers

Fery Rides recruits "sister partners" through referrals and campaigns. The platform supports women who may not have a driver’s license, assisting them in obtaining one during onboarding. Training programs are tailored to skill levels, ensuring every driver is confident and prepared.

  • Training: Experienced trainers provide guidance, while new learners undergo road safety training at Hero MotoCorp Safety Park.
  • Compensation: Partners earn a stable income with incentives for ride volume and quality, with full-time earnings reaching up to Rs 30,000.

Technological Backbone

Built on robust technology, Fery Rides’ app ensures seamless operations. Using Flutter for cross-platform compatibility, and powered by Node.js and Express.js, the platform integrates Razorpay for payments and Google Maps for navigation.

Overcoming Challenges and Securing Funding

Initially, the concept faced skepticism. Women were hesitant to become drivers in a male-dominated space. However, Fery Rides persevered, securing Rs 50 lakh from the Startup India Seed Fund and Rs 2.075 crore in a seed round led by Indian Angel Network. These funds are fueling technology enhancements and operational scaling.

Future Plans and Expansion

Since its inception, Fery Rides has completed over 80,000 rides in Gurugram. The startup aims to expand aggressively, increasing its partner base and testing operations in Noida and Delhi. By 2027, Fery Rides plans to operate in 10 cities, including Bengaluru and Hyderabad, with a network of 5,000+ drivers and a target ARR of Rs 100 crore.

The demand for Fery Rides is palpable, with over 30,000 inquiries from Bangalore alone. This interest underscores the need for safe, reliable mobility options for women across India.

A New Era of Commuting

Fery Rides is not just a transport service; it’s a movement towards safer, more inclusive commuting. By focusing on women’s safety and empowerment, Fery Rides is setting a precedent for future mobility solutions.

What if more companies followed suit, prioritizing safety and inclusivity? The success of Fery Rides may inspire a broader shift in how we approach transportation, making it safer for everyone.
