AquaExchange Is Building The OS For India’s Shrimp Economy

AquaExchange, an agritech startup, is transforming India’s shrimp farming industry by developing a full-stack technology platform. Founded by Pavan Kosaraju, Hemasundar Dhavili, Kareem Mohammod, and Kiran Bandi, the company aims to address the lack of formal finance, insurance, and reliable data in a ₹35,000 crore export industry centered in Andhra Pradesh. By integrating IoT devices, AI models, and financial services, AquaExchange is working with over 71,000 acres of farms and nearly 6,000 farmers, aspiring to revolutionize aquaculture and potentially other animal-protein sectors.

India is a major player in the global shrimp export market, with shrimp accounting for a significant portion of its seafood exports. Despite this, the industry suffers from a lack of data transparency and risk management. AquaExchange addresses these issues by embedding technology directly into farming operations. One of its key products, Powerman, is an IoT-based power monitoring system that alerts farmers of power disruptions, crucial for maintaining shrimp pond aeration. With over 20,000 devices deployed, the startup has expanded into automated feeding systems, water monitoring devices, and farm analytics tools.

AquaExchange’s approach emphasizes frugal engineering, ensuring technology remains affordable for small farmers. The company manufactures its devices in-house, maintaining a production capacity of 25,000 units annually. By leveraging AI for predictive animal health monitoring and farm planning, AquaExchange democratizes access to advanced analytics, previously available only to large-scale operations.

Turning Farm Data Into Fintech

Improved data visibility has enabled AquaExchange to layer financial services on its platform. By partnering with NBFCs, banks, and institutions like NABARD, the company has developed a farm risk scoring system, enhancing credit access for aquaculture. Additionally, AquaExchange’s data supports insurers in offering disease-based coverage, addressing a critical gap in traditional insurance products.

The startup is also facilitating market linkages by partnering with certification bodies like the Aquaculture Stewardship Council and Best Aquaculture Practices. This enables farmers to meet global quality standards and gain access to international markets. AquaExchange’s full-stack model integrates on-ground farming solutions with financial and market access, positioning it uniquely in the agritech space.

What The Future Holds

In March, AquaExchange secured $8 million in Series B funding, co-led by Endiya Partners and Factor Analytics. This investment will support its growth objectives, including expanding its global footprint. The company has already entered markets like Ecuador, Saudi Arabia, and Madagascar. Looking ahead, AquaExchange plans to replicate its technology-driven model across other animal-protein sectors such as fish, poultry, and dairy, aiming to build digital infrastructure for a broader agricultural economy.
