DevSparks Pune: Arsh Goyal on Coding vs. Engineering Trends

Writing code is getting commoditised, not engineering: Arsh Goyal at DevSparks Pune

Share

As artificial intelligence systems grow more capable, one question continues to dominate conversations across the technology industry: will AI replace human developers?

At DevSparks Pune 2026, this question was at the forefront as AI and engineering influencer Arsh Goyal addressed developer anxieties. His session explored how AI is evolving and what engineers must do to remain relevant in an increasingly automated world. Goyal’s message was clear: while AI may commoditise certain parts of coding, the deeper craft of engineering remains firmly human.

### The Rise of AI in Development

Goyal began by addressing the rapid advancements in AI tools, highlighting a key turning point in March 2024 when Cognition AI released Devin AI. This AI software engineer demonstrated the ability to complete freelance tasks autonomously, causing widespread concern about the future of software engineering.

Two years later, Devin’s capabilities have matured, reportedly understanding problems at a senior developer level, though execution still mirrors that of a junior engineer. Goyal cited an example where Devin agents completed a complex task for Goldman Sachs in a fraction of the time it would take humans. However, he noted that these AI systems still lack the ability to improvise and handle unexpected errors, a critical skill that human engineers possess.

### Implications for Developers

The rise of more autonomous AI systems is reshaping how developers perceive their roles. While some fear automation, others find their expertise becoming more valuable. Goyal explained that the landscape shifted with tools like GitHub Copilot and ChatGPT, which introduced new ways for developers to interact with AI. The advent of Agentic AI, capable of handling entire projects, marks a significant transformation.

Despite these advancements, the impact on developer workflows is complex. Some engineers report that AI tools can slow them down, depending on how they are used. Goyal emphasized the importance of being aware of market changes and choosing the right AI tools for specific tasks.

The broader job market is also shifting. Reports suggest Devin’s capabilities may already be affecting hiring patterns, with a decrease in junior-level positions. Companies are focusing on precision hiring, seeking smaller teams with higher expertise. Meanwhile, the concept of one-person startups, supported by AI tools, is gaining traction.

### The Path Forward for Engineers

As AI continues to evolve, some traditional programming tasks will become less valuable. However, the future of engineering will emphasize skills that machines struggle with: designing complex systems, understanding architecture, and orchestrating AI tools effectively.

Goyal advised developers to experiment with AI rather than fear it, suggesting they focus on areas where AI currently falls short. By understanding where AI makes mistakes, developers can maintain an edge.

For India’s startup ecosystem, these developments signal a shift toward more advanced engineering roles and the potential for innovative business models. As AI tools become more integrated into development processes, Indian startups may find new opportunities to leverage technology for growth.

Looking ahead, the evolution of AI in software development will likely continue to challenge and redefine the roles of human engineers. Developers who adapt and embrace these changes will be well-positioned to thrive in this new landscape.
