WeVOIS: Transforming India’s Waste Crisis into Opportunity
In the bustling campus of IIT Delhi, a simple yet profound incident sparked a movement. Abhishek Gupta, witnessing a man bypassing a clean toilet to urinate against a wall, was driven to question the state of public sanitation. This moment of reflection led to the birth of WeVOIS, a startup aiming to tackle India’s waste management challenges.
The Genesis of WeVOIS
Abhishek and his friend Abhinav Shekhar Vashistha, both students at IIIT Jabalpur, were deeply involved in the Swachh Bharat Mission. Their curiosity about sanitation failures led them to develop a mobile app in 2017, designed to locate nearby toilets and dustbins. This small step laid the foundation for WeVOIS, which officially launched in 2018 in Jaipur.
Mission and Vision
WeVOIS stands for "We, to see," symbolizing collective awareness and responsibility. Their mission is ambitious: to build 100 zero-waste cities by 2029. Central to this vision is the use of IoT platforms, real-time data insights, and community-centric strategies. The startup’s commitment to dignifying sanitation workers and supporting municipal systems is at the heart of their approach.
A Scalable Model
Led by CEO Abhishek Gupta and CTO Abhinav Shekhar Vashistha, WeVOIS employs over 350 professionals and 1,900 sanitation workers across 25 cities. Their model includes:
- IoT-enabled waste collection
- Decentralized Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs)
- Rural waste management through Rural Smart Village Centres (RSVCs)
These innovations are crucial for expanding both urban and rural operations in India.
Addressing India’s Waste Management Challenges
India generates an astounding 160,000 metric tonnes of waste daily. Issues like poor segregation and outdated infrastructure plague the system. WeVOIS tackles these challenges by:
- Implementing tech-enabled waste collection
- Conducting community awareness campaigns
- Empowering sanitation workers
- Promoting transparent, data-driven governance
Their efforts have been recognized by the Government of India, Forbes India, and other prestigious organizations.
Impact and Recognition
Operating in over 25 cities, WeVOIS processes more than 600,000 tonnes of waste annually, benefiting 4.2 million citizens. Their human-centered approach has earned them accolades and set a benchmark for others in the industry.
Expanding Horizons
WeVOIS is not just focusing on urban centers. They are pioneering RSVCs to address sanitation in India’s 650,000+ villages. These centers promote composting, waste segregation, and employment generation, particularly in underserved communities.
Looking to the Future
By 2029, WeVOIS plans to expand to 200 cities and establish 500 RSVCs. They are also developing AI-powered MRFs and textile recycling units, with international pilots on the horizon.
Insights from the Founders
Abhishek and Abhinav’s journey underscores the importance of starting small and building boldly. They advise aspiring entrepreneurs: "Don’t wait for perfect conditions. Start where you are. Build boldly. Stay grounded in solving real problems."
Conclusion
WeVOIS is a shining example of how innovation and dedication can transform a nation’s waste management landscape. Their story is a testament to the power of grassroots action and the impact of technology in solving real-world problems.
