Bengaluru Startup Hooly Develops AI Fitness Coach to Boost Motivation

Bengaluru-based startup Hooly is making strides in the healthtech sector with an innovative AI-powered fitness coach designed to tackle motivation issues. Founded by Varun Francis and Pavan Gowda, Hooly aims to transform how individuals approach fitness by offering a personalised experience that considers users’ goals, schedules, and physical conditions.

The startup’s journey began with a focus on AI for customer support, but a strategic pivot in October led to the development of the fitness coach. With 70 users across India, the US, UAE, and Italy, Hooly is targeting the 35-50 age group, a demographic often overlooked by traditional fitness solutions.

Understanding Motivation in Fitness

Hooly’s AI fitness coach differentiates itself by addressing the motivational barriers that many face when pursuing fitness goals. In a country where only one in ten people exercise daily, according to a 2024 report, Hooly recognises the need for a culturally sensitive approach to health. The platform leverages India’s rich tradition of health practices, such as yoga and nutrition, while offering personalised solutions that account for the nation’s diverse population.

The AI coach provides practical, empathetic recommendations. For instance, if a user misses a workout, the system might suggest a quick mobility routine. This approach ensures that users remain engaged and motivated, setting Hooly apart in a crowded fitness ecosystem.

Competition and Market Dynamics

Hooly operates in an increasingly competitive landscape, with other Bengaluru-based startups like SuperLiving and HealthifyMe offering wellness solutions. However, Hooly’s founders believe their product’s proactive architecture offers a unique advantage. By focusing on the trigger and action stages of habit formation, Hooly aims to influence user behaviour more effectively than traditional feedback-driven apps.

The startup’s decision to operate via WhatsApp also reduces the friction of app downloads, making it more accessible to users. This strategic choice aligns with Hooly’s goal of avoiding information overload, providing concise, actionable advice instead of lengthy explanations.

Implications for India’s Startup Ecosystem

Hooly’s development reflects broader trends in India’s startup ecosystem, where innovation and personalisation are becoming key differentiators. The company’s focus on AI-driven solutions for motivation and accountability highlights a growing recognition of the need for tailored approaches in diverse markets like India.

With plans to raise $500,000 in a pre-seed round, Hooly aims to expand its user base to 10,000 active members. This funding will support its go-to-market strategy and further development of its AI capabilities, positioning the startup for growth in a sector poised for significant expansion.

Looking Ahead

As Hooly continues to refine its AI fitness coach, the startup is poised to capture a unique segment of the healthtech market. By remaining headquartered in India, Francis and Gowda are betting on the country’s untapped potential and growing interest in personalised health solutions. The next phase of growth will likely focus on scaling operations and enhancing data privacy measures, ensuring Hooly remains competitive in a rapidly evolving landscape.
