India’s Mid-Market Firms Excel in AI Adoption Amid Rising Complexity Costs
Share

India’s mid-market companies are at the forefront of global AI adoption, according to a new report by Freshworks. However, while these firms are making significant strides in integrating AI into their operations, they face substantial costs associated with complexity and inefficiencies. The report sheds light on the dual-edged nature of AI integration for these businesses, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges.

### The Company and Its Findings

Freshworks, a software company known for its customer and employee engagement solutions, conducted the ‘Global Cost of Complexity Report: The Mid-Market AI Complexity Trap’. The study surveyed over 9,000 IT decision-makers across six countries, focusing on the mid-market segment. The findings reveal that Indian companies lose about 27% of their AI budgets due to complexity-related overheads, surpassing the global average of 25%. This equates to an estimated Rs 33,000 crore in AI spending wasted annually. Despite these setbacks, India leads the world in AI integration within mid-market organisations, with 36% embedding AI across multiple core business operations, more than double the global average of 15%.

### Context and Competitive Landscape

The rapid adoption of AI by Indian mid-market firms highlights the competitive nature of the sector. These companies are not only investing in AI to enhance efficiency but are also under pressure to see quick returns. The report indicates that 74% of Indian executives expect returns from AI investments within eight months, though deployment often takes six to 12 months to become operational. System integration challenges, talent shortages, and extensive configuration requirements are significant hurdles. Moreover, the average use of 4.6 AI tools per firm, higher than the global average of 4.2, indicates a trend towards technology sprawl. This complexity is driving a preference for AI products with built-in workflows, as 93% of respondents favor faster implementation and measurable business outcomes.

### Implications for India’s Startup Ecosystem

The findings of the Freshworks report have profound implications for India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem. As AI becomes a core component of business operations, startups focusing on AI solutions have a significant opportunity to address the pain points identified in the report. The demand for seamless integration and high-quality outputs presents a niche for startups to innovate. Furthermore, the challenges of AI deployment highlight the need for skilled talent, suggesting that startups in the education and training sectors could play a pivotal role in bridging the skills gap. The report’s emphasis on the preference for built-in workflows over heavily customised solutions also signals a shift towards standardisation, which could influence product development strategies for tech startups.

Looking ahead, the focus for Indian mid-market firms will likely center on optimizing AI deployments to reduce complexity costs and improve efficiency. For founders and investors, the key will be to watch how companies balance rapid AI adoption with the need for streamlined, effective integration. As the demand for AI solutions that deliver quick and tangible returns grows, the startup ecosystem is poised to play a critical role in shaping the future of AI in India.
