Razorpay’s Vision: Transforming Commerce with Conversational AI
Imagine a world where you can simply ask your fridge to buy milk. This isn’t a futuristic dream but a reality that Harshil Mathur, Co-founder and CEO of Razorpay, is actively working towards. At the heart of this transformation is "agentic commerce," where payments are seamlessly integrated into conversational AI interfaces.
The Rise of Agentic Commerce
Recently, Razorpay unveiled its Agentic Payments on Claude, in collaboration with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). This innovation allows users to order from platforms like Zomato, Swiggy, and Zepto through a chat interface, marking a significant step in AI-native commerce.
Mathur emphasizes that this shift isn’t just about adding a new checkout button. It’s about reimagining commerce. Traditional app-based interfaces often dictate how users interact. In contrast, conversational interfaces mimic the natural flow of in-store shopping. You simply express your needs, and the system responds.
Why Conversational Commerce?
Mathur believes that conversational commerce can revolutionize the way we shop. Consider walking into a store without a search bar. You ask for what you need, and the retailer provides it. This is the experience Razorpay aims to replicate digitally. By saying, "I want to cook halwa," the AI can suggest ingredients, help you create a shopping cart, and even consider what you already have at home.
"AI shouldn’t stop at recommendations—it should finish the job," Mathur asserts. This approach aligns with a voice-first, multilingual model, making commerce more accessible and personalized.
Early Adoption and Future Prospects
Currently, Razorpay’s agentic integration uses UPI Reserve Pay, allowing users to set spending limits and complete purchases without repeated PIN prompts. The feature is gradually being rolled out to Razorpay’s gateway customers. Mathur describes this phase as early but active, with thousands expressing interest in the pilot.
The potential for conversational commerce in India is immense. As Mathur notes, "This is right now. We’re just piloting it, but I believe it can be a massive opportunity for India over the next 5 to 10 years."
The Competitive Landscape
Razorpay isn’t alone in this pursuit. Cashfree Payments has launched "Cashfree Here," a payments extension for AI applications built on OpenAI’s Apps SDK. This tool ensures seamless transactions within chat interfaces, secured by passkey-enabled biometric authentication supported by Mastercard.
The competition highlights the growing interest in conversational commerce, pushing companies to innovate and improve user experiences.
Implications and Opportunities
- User Experience: Conversational commerce offers a more intuitive shopping experience, reducing friction and enhancing satisfaction.
- Market Potential: With India’s diverse linguistic landscape, a multilingual-first approach could significantly expand market reach.
- Technological Integration: Seamless integration with existing platforms like UPI and biometric authentication ensures security and ease of use.
Questions to Consider
- How will businesses adapt their models to leverage conversational AI?
- What role will data privacy play in this evolving landscape?
- Can conversational commerce truly replace traditional shopping experiences?
As you ponder these questions, it’s clear that the future of commerce is conversational, and Razorpay is at the forefront of this transformation. By embracing AI and redefining user interactions, the company is setting a new standard for how we shop and engage with technology.
