Google-owned YouTube has appointed Gunjan Soni as its new country managing director for India, marking a significant leadership change as the platform continues to deepen its presence in one of its largest markets.
Soni succeeds Ishan Chatterjee, who left the company in 2024 to join JioCinema as chief revenue officer.

Gunjan Soni’s Leadership Experience
Gunjan Soni brings over two decades of leadership experience spanning business, technology, marketing, and e-commerce. She previously served as Group CEO at Zalora in Singapore, where she introduced new categories, launched innovative business models, and improved customer experience through personalization and loyalty programs.
Before Zalora, Soni held leadership roles at Flipkart’s Myntra and Jabong, served as executive vice president at Star India, where she played a pivotal role in launching Hotstar, and was a partner at McKinsey in the consumer and marketing practice. Under her leadership, YouTube India is expected to focus on:
-
Enhancing Creator Support: Developing programs and tools to help creators produce high-quality content and monetize their channels effectively.
-
Expanding Regional Content: Investing in content that caters to India’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscape.
- Strengthening Partnerships: Collaborating with local businesses and advertisers to create mutually beneficial opportunities.
Soni’s track record suggests a strategic approach to these initiatives, aiming to solidify YouTube’s position as a leading platform in India’s digital ecosystem.
As YouTube continues to evolve, the industry will be watching closely to see how Soni’s leadership influences the platform’s trajectory in one of its most dynamic markets.
