Google Expands AI Connectivity with New Undersea Cable Routes

In a significant move to bolster global AI infrastructure, Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced the launch of new undersea cable routes connecting the US and India. This development was unveiled at India’s AI Impact Summit 2026, where Pichai highlighted Google’s commitment to enhancing AI connectivity and skilling initiatives across the globe.

Focus on AI Connectivity

The "India-America Connect" initiative aims to establish new subsea cable routes, enhancing connectivity between the US, India, and various locations in the southern hemisphere. This expansion is part of a broader $15 billion investment in an AI hub in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, which will feature a gigawatt-scale compute facility and an international subsea cable gateway.

These advancements are expected to significantly improve AI data transfer speeds and reliability, facilitating better collaboration and innovation in AI technologies between the two nations. The initiative underscores Google’s strategy to create a robust AI backbone, essential for future technological advancements.

Skilling and Educational Initiatives

Pichai announced several educational initiatives aimed at empowering millions in India:

  • Google AI Professional Certificate Programme: Offered in English and Hindi, this program will expand to include more Indian languages, targeting students and early career professionals. In collaboration with Wadhwani AI, it aims to equip learners with essential AI skills.

  • Partnership with Karma Yogi Bharat: Google Cloud will support India’s civil service by providing secure infrastructure for a platform serving over 20 million public servants across 800 districts in 18 languages.

  • Atal Tinkering Labs Collaboration: Google plans to bring Gen AI assistance to over 10,000 Indian schools, benefiting 11 million students with a focus on robotics and coding.

These initiatives reflect Google’s commitment to fostering a skilled workforce capable of leveraging AI for societal benefits.

AI’s Transformative Potential

Pichai emphasized AI’s role as a transformative force, describing it as "the biggest platform shift of our lifetimes." He highlighted AI’s potential to address global challenges such as disease prediction, community resilience, and accessible learning.

India’s trajectory in AI was also a focal point, with Pichai noting the country’s potential to be a leader in AI development and governance. Drawing from his own experiences growing up in Chennai, he expressed confidence in India’s ability to shape the future of AI.

Global Research and Development

In addition to connectivity and education, Google announced a $30 million AI for Science Impact Challenge through Google.org, supporting researchers worldwide using AI for scientific breakthroughs. This initiative aims to drive innovation and discovery in various scientific fields.

The Bigger Picture

Google’s efforts align with a broader trend of tech giants investing in undersea cables to support the growing demand for data and connectivity. Companies like Microsoft and Amazon are also exploring similar ventures to enhance global digital infrastructure.

The expansion of subsea cables is crucial for improving internet speeds and reliability, especially in emerging markets. As digital transformation accelerates, such infrastructure investments become vital for economic growth and technological advancement.

Questions for Consideration

  • How will enhanced AI connectivity impact industries beyond technology, such as healthcare and education?
  • What role will India play in shaping global AI policies and standards?
  • How can other countries replicate Google’s model to foster AI innovation and connectivity?

As Google continues to expand its AI capabilities, its initiatives in connectivity, education, and research are set to have a lasting impact on the global tech landscape. These efforts not only enhance technological infrastructure but also empower individuals and communities to participate in the digital economy.
