Greengine Deploys World’s First Vertical Algal Biofilm Carbon Capture & Utilization Unit

Kanpur-based startup Greengine Environmental Technologies has taken a significant step in climate tech by launching the G-Urban Tree 100x, the world’s first vertical algal biofilm carbon capture unit, at Engineers India Limited’s (EIL) office in Gurugram. This deployment marks a key moment in India’s pursuit of innovative climate solutions, particularly in urban areas where space is limited.

The G-Urban Tree 100x utilizes Greengine’s patented Vertical Algal Biofilm Technology (VABT™), which leverages the photosynthetic power of microalgae to capture carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Each unit is designed to capture approximately 2.25 tonnes of CO₂ annually, equating to the environmental impact of 100 mature trees. The compact, solar-powered system is ideal for urban settings, offering a scalable solution where traditional tree planting is unfeasible. The units are crafted from upcycled steel and support remote monitoring, ensuring sustainability and efficiency.

Context and Competition

Greengine’s innovation arrives at a time when India’s startup ecosystem is increasingly focused on sustainability and climate resilience. The deployment of such technology highlights the growing trend of deep-tech startups collaborating with established institutions to address environmental challenges. While the carbon capture market is still nascent in India, Greengine’s approach could set a precedent for integrating nature-inspired technology into urban planning and industrial processes.

Implications for India’s Startup Ecosystem

The introduction of the G-Urban Tree 100x underscores the potential for Indian startups to contribute significantly to global climate solutions. As cities grapple with pollution and limited green spaces, technologies like Greengine’s offer a viable alternative to traditional methods. The partnership with EIL, a Navratna public sector enterprise, reflects a broader movement towards public-private collaborations aimed at accelerating the adoption of frontier climate technologies.

Looking Ahead

Greengine’s innovative approach could pave the way for further applications of its VABT™ system, particularly in industrial sectors where carbon capture is critical. As India continues to advance its sustainability goals, the success of such technologies will be crucial in shaping the future of urban and industrial decarbonization efforts. The deployment at EIL is just the beginning, with potential expansions into other urban and industrial areas across the country.
