IIT Madras Research Park and Unicorn India Ventures Launch $66M Fund for Deeptech Startups

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras Research Park (IITMRP) and Unicorn India Ventures have unveiled a significant initiative—a $66.3 million fund aimed at nurturing early-stage deep technology startups. This collaboration marks a pivotal step in bolstering India’s strategic interests in sectors such as robotics, space technology, defense, and semiconductors.

Focus on Deeptech Innovation

The fund, named ‘IIT Madras Unicorn Frontier Fund I’, is designed to support intellectual property-led startups. By focusing on these high-tech areas, the initiative seeks to reduce India’s dependency on technology imports and foster domestic innovation. This move aligns with the Union Budget 2026’s ‘India Semiconductor Mission 2.0’, which aims to expand capabilities beyond fabrication into equipment and design IP.

Key Features of the Fund

  • Greenshoe Option: The fund includes a Rs 400 crore greenshoe option, allowing additional investments if needed.
  • Investment Strategy: Plans to invest in approximately 25 startups, primarily sourced from IIT Madras incubations.
  • Lifecycle: The fund is designed as "patient capital" with a lifecycle of up to 12 years.

Government Support and Industry Growth

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has expanded the definition of deep tech startups, recognizing entities for up to 20 years and raising the turnover cap to $33.1 million. This acknowledges the long gestation periods and high capital requirements inherent to the sector.

According to Tracxn, Indian deep tech startups raised $1.57 billion across 265 deals in 2025, reflecting growing investor confidence despite global economic challenges.

Insights from Industry Leaders

Natarajan “Nat” Malupillai, CEO of IITM Research Park, emphasized the potential of India’s deep tech ecosystem: “We have demonstrated that without pouring in billions of dollars, we can build mission-driven, globally competitive and innovation-led startups from here.”

The Role of IIT Madras Research Park

IIT Madras Research Park has been a cradle for innovation, providing resources and mentorship to budding entrepreneurs. By partnering with Unicorn India Ventures, the park aims to accelerate innovation and shape India’s deep tech future.

Why This Matters to You

  • Opportunity for Startups: If you’re an entrepreneur in the deep tech space, this fund could be a game-changer for your startup.
  • Investor Confidence: The increasing investments in deep tech signal robust growth potential, making it an attractive sector for investors.
  • Strategic Importance: The focus on reducing import dependency and enhancing domestic capabilities aligns with national interests.
