Indigo Backs Sarla Aviation in Air-Taxi Venture

Indigo invests in air-taxi maker Sarla Aviation

Share

India’s largest airline, IndiGo, has taken a significant step into the burgeoning air-taxi sector by acquiring an equity stake worth ₹10 crore in Sarla Aviation, a Bengaluru-based startup. This move marks IndiGo’s commitment to exploring innovative mobility solutions in the face of evolving transportation demands.

### Sarla Aviation’s Vision

Founded in 2023 by Adrian Schmidt, Rakesh Gaonkar, and Shivam Chauhan, Sarla Aviation is focused on developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, branded as Shunya. The startup has been making strides in creating sustainable urban air mobility solutions. With the latest funding from IndiGo, Sarla plans to bolster its operations, address capital expenditure needs, and expand its business footprint. The investment aligns with the startup’s goal of launching its air taxis by 2028 in Bengaluru.

### Competitive Landscape and Funding

Sarla Aviation has attracted considerable attention from investors, having raised approximately $13.4 million to date. The company secured a $10 million Series A1 round in early 2025, led by Accel and Nikhil Kamath. This financial backing underscores the confidence investors have in Sarla’s potential to revolutionize urban transportation. The air-taxi market in India is gaining traction, with startups vying to develop efficient and eco-friendly alternatives to conventional transport. Sarla’s focus on eVTOL technology places it in direct competition with international players aiming to penetrate the Indian market.

### Implications for India’s Startup Ecosystem

IndiGo’s investment in Sarla Aviation signifies a growing interest in air-taxi services within the Indian market. As urban centers face increasing congestion, air taxis offer a promising solution for reducing travel time and enhancing connectivity. This development could stimulate further investments in the sector, encouraging more startups to explore advanced mobility technologies. It also highlights the role of established companies like IndiGo in fostering innovation by supporting emerging tech ventures. Such collaborations are crucial for accelerating the adoption of new transportation modes in India.

### Future Prospects

With IndiGo’s backing, Sarla Aviation is poised to advance its eVTOL technology and move closer to commercial deployment. The partnership may also pave the way for more strategic alliances between aviation giants and startups, potentially reshaping the future of urban mobility in India. As Sarla continues its development efforts, the industry will be watching closely to see how this collaboration influences the broader air-taxi landscape.
