Kritsnam Develops India’s Water Accounting Technology

How Kritsnam is building India’s water accounting system

Share

In India, water management is a critical issue, with much of the resource remaining unmeasured and unaccounted for. Kritsnam Technologies, founded by IIT Kanpur alumni, is addressing this gap by developing a water accounting system that aims to bring transparency and accountability to water usage across industries, cities, and farms. This development is crucial in a country where water scarcity and regulatory pressures are mounting.

Kritsnam, established in 2015, initially focused on measuring water flow accurately, a task often neglected in India. The company’s Defensible Water Accounting System (DWAS) treats water data with the precision of financial records, ensuring every transaction is measured, recorded, and traceable. This system is increasingly relevant as regulatory frameworks like BRSR demand accurate water consumption disclosures, creating a mismatch between reported and actual usage.

The DWAS operates through a multi-layered approach, utilizing smart meters for precise measurements and a cloud-based system for real-time data validation. This data is then transformed into structured records, ready for audits and compliance checks. By providing a reliable system of record, Kritsnam addresses the need for defensible and traceable water usage data, aligning with tightening regulations from bodies like the Central Ground Water Authority.

Kritsnam’s journey has not been without challenges. Initially, the market was slow to adopt such technology despite recognition from global institutions. However, the landscape shifted in 2020 with stricter groundwater regulations, making accurate measurement essential. Today, Kritsnam’s technology is deployed across India, tracking over 2 billion liters of water daily. The company operates on a subscription model, offering continuous water accounting services, which has resulted in strong retention and predictable revenue.

In the broader Indian startup ecosystem, Kritsnam’s approach highlights a shift towards integrated solutions. Unlike many players focusing on isolated aspects of water management, Kritsnam controls the entire tech stack, from hardware to data reporting. This full-stack control is supported by patents and in-house capabilities, providing a competitive edge in a domain where data trustworthiness is paramount.

Looking ahead, Kritsnam plans to expand its subscription base and introduce cost-effective solutions for smaller industrial users. The company aims to set the standard for water accounting in India, with potential applications in other emerging economies facing similar challenges. As water accountability becomes increasingly critical, Kritsnam’s foundation could play a pivotal role in ensuring sustainable water management practices globally.
