India’s kirana stores, which constitute more than 1.4 crore outlets and handle nearly 75-80% of FMCG sales, are the backbone of the country’s retail economy. Despite their scale, these stores often rely on outdated, fragmented ordering systems and manual sales processes, lacking visibility into stock availability and promotional schemes. The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC), in collaboration with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), is launching ‘DigiDukaan’ to address these inefficiencies.
### What Is DigiDukaan?
DigiDukaan is an ONDC-powered initiative designed to digitise B2B procurement for India’s kirana stores. By connecting retailers, distributors, and brands through a unified digital network, the platform aims to streamline the ordering process, improve inventory management, and offer better access to promotional schemes. Retailers will gain enhanced visibility into products and pricing, while distributors can digitise order collection, reducing reliance on large field sales teams. Brands, on the other hand, will benefit from clearer demand signals and improved visibility into secondary sales.
The initiative was first piloted in Hyderabad in March 2023 through ONDC network participant Qwipo, onboarding over 10,000 retailers and 35 brands. Following this, DigiDukaan is set to expand to Jaipur on June 19 through Salescode.ai, with plans to launch in Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Delhi NCR in the coming months.
### Addressing Supply Chain Inefficiencies
India’s general trade network, despite its vast reach, remains largely offline, leading to inefficiencies in the supply chain. Retailers face frequent stockouts and working-capital constraints, while distributors incur high costs maintaining extensive sales teams. Brands struggle with demand forecasting, tracking secondary sales, and gauging promotional effectiveness. These challenges have been exacerbated as consumer behavior shifts towards digital-first retail models.
Recent discussions at a consumer packaged goods (CPG) roundtable, organised by DPIIT and ONDC, highlighted rising sales force costs and fragmented retailer engagement as critical industry challenges. DigiDukaan aims to tackle these issues by leveraging ONDC’s open network framework, allowing seamless transactions across different stakeholders.
### Implications for India’s Startup Ecosystem
DigiDukaan’s launch and expansion come at a pivotal time for India’s startup ecosystem, especially in the digital commerce sector. By offering a scalable, digital-first solution to kirana stores, ONDC is not only modernizing traditional retail but also opening new avenues for tech startups to innovate in supply chain management, data analytics, and retail technology. This move could encourage further investment in digital infrastructure, fostering a more integrated and efficient retail ecosystem.
As DigiDukaan rolls out in major Indian cities, it may serve as a catalyst for similar initiatives aimed at digitizing other segments of the retail industry. For founders and investors, this represents an opportunity to explore new business models and technologies that can enhance operational efficiencies and customer engagement. The success of DigiDukaan could potentially reshape the retail landscape, making it more competitive and resilient.
In the coming months, stakeholders will be closely watching DigiDukaan’s impact on kirana store operations and its ability to scale effectively across different markets. This initiative’s progress will be crucial for entrepreneurs and investors looking to tap into India’s burgeoning digital commerce sector.
