Schmooze Unveils Voice AI Matchmaker ‘Riya’ To Tackle Swipe Fatigue

India’s crowded dating app market may be witnessing a significant shift as Bengaluru-based Schmooze introduces an AI-powered personal matchmaker. The new feature, named ‘Riya’, aims to redefine how young users discover potential partners by moving beyond traditional swipe-based discovery.

Schmooze, co-founded by Stanford alumna Vidya Madhavan and Abhinav Anurag, has launched ‘Riya’ to engage users in voice-led conversations. This AI matchmaker assesses personality and recommends matches based on deeper compatibility rather than superficial preferences. The startup, backed by Elevation Capital, initially gained traction with a meme-led matching format, where users swiped on memes instead of photos to gauge humour and personality.

The introduction of Riya comes as Schmooze claims that over 300,000 users have interacted with the feature, with retention rates doubling among these users. The AI assistant engages users in natural conversations, discussing topics from lifestyle to relationship goals before suggesting tailored matches. Schmooze has developed its own voice AI stack and large language model, fine-tuned on dating-specific data, to enhance user privacy and reduce costs.

Competitive Landscape and Market Context

India’s dating app market is projected to grow to $1.42 billion by 2030, driven largely by Gen Z users. Despite the dominance of global players like Tinder, Bumble, and Hinge, Schmooze is positioning itself as a unique alternative through its focus on personality-first matching. The company leverages its data advantage from over 5 million users and 3.5 billion meme swipes to refine its understanding of user preferences.

The idea for Riya emerged from Schmooze’s previous AI feature, ‘People Finder’, which highlighted users’ specific partner preferences. This insight led to the development of Riya, which replaces manual filtering with active, voice-based discovery. By capturing nuanced preferences such as humour style and communication patterns, Riya aims to offer a more personalised matchmaking experience.

Implications for India’s Startup Ecosystem

Schmooze’s approach aligns with broader Gen Z behaviour, where interacting with AI assistants is increasingly normalised. This positions the startup as a more intuitive alternative to swipe-heavy platforms. However, competition remains intense, with players like Bumble and Tinder experimenting with new formats, including compatibility quizzes and human-assisted matchmaking.

The launch of Riya highlights a potential shift in the dating app landscape, where user fatigue from repetitive swiping is a growing concern. Schmooze’s conversational AI could signal the next phase of evolution in this category, aiming to deliver deeper compatibility at scale.

Looking Ahead

As Schmooze continues to expand its AI capabilities, the success of Riya could influence the broader dating app market in India. Whether conversational matchmaking can meet the promise of deeper connections remains to be seen, but Schmooze is betting that users are ready for a more engaging, voice-driven experience.
