Study reveals 39% of Indian women fear job loss after miscarriage disclosure
Share

A recent study commissioned by Quest Global highlights a significant issue affecting women in the Indian workforce: the fear of disclosing a miscarriage due to potential job loss or career repercussions. This concern impacts nearly 39% of women surveyed, underscoring the stigma and lack of support around pregnancy loss in professional environments. The study, part of Quest Global’s “Break the Silence” campaign, aims to shift workplace cultures towards acknowledging and supporting pregnancy loss.

### Quest Global and the “Break the Silence” Campaign

Quest Global, an engineering services company, has launched the “Break the Silence” campaign to address the often-overlooked issue of pregnancy loss in the workplace. By commissioning a study with YouGov, Quest Global gathered insights from over 2,000 women and 200 men between the ages of 25 and 39 across India, focusing on those in STEM, technology, engineering, and corporate sectors. The findings reveal that a substantial number of women fear negative career impacts if they disclose a miscarriage. The campaign seeks to encourage employers to recognize pregnancy loss as a legitimate workplace issue and to implement supportive measures for employees navigating such experiences.

### The Current Landscape and the Need for Change

The study’s findings highlight the pressing need for change in workplace policies across India’s tech and corporate sectors. Many women choose to remain silent about their experiences due to fear of judgment from colleagues and employers, with 40% of respondents citing this concern. The data suggests that supportive workplace policies could significantly improve employee willingness to discuss pregnancy loss, with 48% of women indicating they would feel more comfortable if adequate support systems were in place.

In addition, 35% of women surveyed would consider leaving their jobs if they did not receive adequate support following a miscarriage. This statistic points to potential talent retention issues for companies that fail to address these concerns. Companies that provide support not only foster a more inclusive work environment but also enhance employee loyalty and brand reputation. Nearly half of the women surveyed stated they would be more likely to recommend a company that offers support during such challenging times.

### Implications for India’s Startup Ecosystem

The findings from Quest Global’s study have profound implications for India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem, where the competition for skilled talent is intense. Startups, often characterized by their fast-paced and high-pressure environments, must recognize the importance of fostering inclusive and supportive workplaces. By implementing policies that acknowledge and support pregnancy loss, startups can create a more supportive culture that attracts and retains top female talent.

Moreover, as startups strive to scale and secure funding, demonstrating a commitment to employee well-being can be a differentiating factor in attracting investors who are increasingly focused on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria. Addressing such workplace issues can also enhance a startup’s reputation and appeal to a broader range of stakeholders, including potential customers and partners.

As India continues to develop its tech ecosystem, it is crucial for companies to address the silent struggles women face in the workplace. By prioritizing supportive measures for pregnancy loss, businesses not only foster a more inclusive environment but also stand to benefit from enhanced employee loyalty and productivity.

The next steps for both established companies and startups involve integrating comprehensive support systems for employees dealing with pregnancy loss. This shift could influence a broader cultural change in the workplace, leading to more inclusive environments where employees feel valued and supported. Founders and investors should closely observe how such policies impact employee retention and company performance, potentially setting new benchmarks for workplace inclusivity in the Indian tech sector.
