AI-assisted coding has become a significant component of modern software development, and Bengaluru-based ride-hailing platform Rapido is at the forefront of this shift. According to Rishikesh SR, cofounder of Rapido, approximately 66% of the company’s coding is now performed with the assistance of AI. This development not only highlights the increasing reliance on AI in India’s tech industry but also underscores the transformative potential of AI in streamlining development processes.

### Rapido’s Embrace of AI Technology

Rapido, a leading bike-taxi aggregator in India, has integrated AI into its coding practices to enhance efficiency and innovation. The company has restructured its teams, transitioning quality engineers into developer roles to take advantage of AI-driven workflows. This transition has allowed Rapido to significantly speed up its development cycles. Rishikesh SR notes that the time required to move from an idea to production has decreased from over two months to just two weeks, with the release cycle now condensed to one week. A notable example of this rapid development is the “Bikes for Women” feature, which was conceptualized and brought to production within 24 hours.

### The Competitive Landscape and Funding Environment

Rapido’s adoption of AI is emblematic of a broader trend within the Indian startup ecosystem, where companies are leveraging advanced technologies to gain competitive advantages. Founded in 2015 by Aravind Sanka, Pavan Guntupalli, and Rishikesh SR, Rapido has grown to become one of the largest players in India’s ride-hailing market. The company recently secured $240 million in a funding round led by Prosus, contributing to a larger $730 million round. This funding is intended to fuel Rapido’s expansion into new markets, enhance its driver network, and invest further in technology. The capital infusion places Rapido in a strong position to compete with other major players like Ola and Uber, especially as the company continues to innovate rapidly with AI-driven solutions.

### Implications for India’s Startup Ecosystem

Rapido’s AI-centric approach has broader implications for India’s burgeoning startup ecosystem. As startups increasingly adopt AI, they are likely to see accelerated development timelines and improved product iterations. This shift could lead to more competitive offerings in the market, potentially driving innovation across various sectors. For investors and stakeholders, the growing use of AI in development represents a promising avenue for investment, as it can lead to scalable and efficient business models.

The rapid integration of AI in startups like Rapido also presents challenges, such as maintaining a balance between AI-driven efficiencies and human oversight. As Rishikesh SR pointed out, while AI can solve many problems, it may not be reliable in every context. Thus, companies must ensure rigorous testing and iteration processes to harness AI’s benefits fully.

Moving forward, it will be critical for Indian startups to continue exploring AI’s potential while ensuring robust frameworks for its application. For founders, this means staying attuned to technological advancements and fostering an environment where innovation can thrive. Investors should watch how companies like Rapido leverage AI to drive growth and efficiency, as these strategies could define the next phase of India’s tech evolution.
